Agriculture employs over 50% of the work force in Senegal, with about 80% of those workers being in rural areas, like Ngonine. From 2021 to 2022, the Agriculture Project grew from 2 staff to 7, with Mission Senegal providing support for seeds, water sources, fencing, and equipment. A soil engineer from a local city has also started coming monthly to mentor the farmers and provide expertise on the land. Some of the plants include: millet, peanuts, okra, eggplant, and hot peppers.
In the early 2000s, Mission Senegal funded and placed 9 water spigots and created 2 central wells. People in the village then installed their own spigots in their compound, totaling to an incredible 251 spigots! Access to potable water has reduced medical care needs by 40%. Before the spigots women used to spend up to 3 hours a day walking to the closest water point. Now, it’s within minutes!
